Oliver Kelley Farm Field Trip! Middle schoolers are heading east (VIDEO)

The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 6th and 7th grade classes of 2030 and 2031 are heading east on a middle school field trip. The destination is the Oliver Kelley Farm in rural Elk River, which is a Minnesota Historical Society site. On this field trip, students will experience the original 1860s era work that took place on this farm over 150 years ago. They will get an up close view of animals and gardens while learning a little about Kelley, who was a highly-regarded farm activist who helped found The Grange movement in America.

The Oliver Kelly Farm also includes nature trails that wind along the Mississippi River where students can explore woodlands and restored prairie.

Our bus drivers today are Howard Johnson and Dave Bertram. We departed the high school parking lot at 9:19 a.m. Wish us luck!

10:55 a.m...we arrived at Oliver Kelley Farm and entered the welcoming center, which had air conditioning! The bus ride got hot! The sun is shining strong.

Here's students providing grooming care to draft horses:

The field trip included education sessions at four separate stations. At one station, students learned how pioneers made sauerkraut. Part of the process was having the cabbage sit out in the open for a 6 month period while it cured!

Before 1 p.m. and after the students ate their lunches, the buses were loaded, and Howard and Dave began the drive back to Belgrade. The trip was a great success. We arrived back to the high school at 2:30 p.m. safe and sound.

COVID-19 school funding

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa schools will receive a total of $77,092 from the CARES Act, which stands for Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security in 2020-2021.

These funds come in two forms. One is called the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief or (GEER), and the other is Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief or (ESSER).

GEER funds can only be used for Technology or Summer School programming. B-B-E will receive $10,235 in GEER Funds.

ESSER funds can be more widely used for relief from the impact of the Coronavirus on the district. BBE will receive $66,875.

The following are allowable uses of the funds:
•  Providing K-12 students with internet and technology for distance
learning
• Helping with students from low-income families and students with
special needs
• Planning & providing online summer learning programs
• Providing school meals
• Providing mental health services
• Sanitizing school buildings

The application for these funds will be done sometime in 2020-21. No decision has been made yet on how B-B-E will expense these funds.

Notice for B-B-E parents of 5th-8th graders

Important information regarding the creation of your 5th-8th grade student's Apple ID:

When the parent email info was initially collected from our system, the first parent/guardian address listed was pulled and sent to Apple. Please be sure to check both email accounts that we have on file (we may have more than one address listed). Please be sure to also check your email's spam, junk, and/or trash folders. If you still did not receive the Apple email, please contact swiechman@bbejaguars.org and our tech staff will look in to it. Do not try to setup your child's Apple ID if you did not receive an email from Apple. Also, on the BBE homepage, there is a blue icon titled 1:1 Device Insurance Protection Plan. This should allow you to make payments online. Thank you for your cooperation and patience in this matter. Note: The first batch of emails were sent on August 13th. Another 30 or so were generated today.

Terrific Grand March!

Kinlee Swanson and Jordan Wosmek in a James Bond pose.

Here's a short video clip from the grand march:

A great-looking crew of Jaguar wrestlers shown after Grand March was complete.

It couldn't have been more perfect. A day after it rained and rained and rained (very needed rain), the B-B-E Prom Grand March was held under sunny skies, hardly a bit of wind and temperatures hovering around 55 degrees. Yeah, a bit on the chilly side, but we had no complaints in Jaguar Country! Besides, that's what the heater's for - whether prom couples showed up in trucks, cars, semi tractors or farm tractors!

School board meeting tonight

What can safely be dubbed a "meaty agenda" is on the docket tonight for the regular monthly meeting of the B-B-E school board. They will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Catholic parish center in Elrosa.

Beyond the usual approval of personnel items such as hires and resignations, Superintendent Bullard will review the district goals under old business. The Meet and Confer committee will have a report on the negotiations between the teachers and administration on the length of the contract days once the school resumes the five-day week schedule.

New business is quite lengthy. It includes: a propane proposal from the Belgrade Coop, B-B-E Community Pool survey data, a proposal on sponsoring a Clay Target League through the MSHSL, a flexible learning year application to start the school year before Labor Day plus review of a draft calendar for the 2015-2016 school year.

Read about what went down at the board meeting in the Jan. 29 issue of the Bonanza Valley Voice.
